About Red Onion
India is a traditional exporter and second largest producer of onion after China. Over the years there has been a progressive increase in the onion exports from India. India produces 40 lakh metric tons of onions annually. Onion is the most commonly and widely used item in various cuisines. Exports of onion have fetched for the country valuable foreign exchange and have earned for the producers a high price per ton. Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat, AP,UP, Orissa & MP are the major onion producing states in India. Maharashtra alone contributes to 30% of the country's annual production. Export of Onion from India brings in around Rs 182,752.21 crore per annum. India has a large onion cultivation area accounting for around 22.4% of the world onion cultivation area.
