About Bananas
One of the healthiest known fruits, bananas are in high demand across the globe. While there are many types of bananas, it is Cavendish that has found a particular niche for itself in the world market. The demand for this variety is good news for India, which is the world’s largest banana producer, with accounting for roughly 29% of global production, as per APEDA.
Mainly grown in Tamilnadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat, India ranks second worldwide with respect to the area, but we rank the first, production-wise. Banana is available in India all around the year. However, the arrival of this fruit starts increasing from April, and these arrivals reach a peak during the August to October period.
We, at Keshavam International, export the two most popular types of Indian Bananas - Cavendish and Robusta.
Cavendish Banana
Normal statured, Robusta banana comes with black-brown blotches on its stem, with its bunches weighing nearly 20 kg, with 8-10 hands per bunch. The length of this thick-skinned fruit is 15 to 20 cm, while its girth is 12 cm.
This semi-tall variety is grown mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu as well as some parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. The plant has a high yield and produces a bunch of large-in-size well-developed fruits. Depending on ripening conditions, the dark green bananas turn bright yellow upon ripening. The fruit is very sweet with a good aroma. A bunch weighs around 25 to 30 kg, which then requires propping. But, the fruit also has a poor keeping quality which can lead to a quick breakdown of the pulp after having ripened and is therefore not suited for particularly long-distance transportations. Bananas of this variety are highly susceptible to Sigatoka leaf spot disease in humid tropical regions.

Major Markets for Banana Exports
The primary export markets of Indian Bananas are Qatar, UAE, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Keshavam International exports to these countries on a regular basis. We now endeavour to increase our reach to South Korea, Japan, in addition to some of the major European Markets too. We’re very pleased with the positive response we have been receiving for the quality and superior taste we have maintained, despite the generally long transit time of our Bananas.
